POTC III Review
Yes, I know you love my new icon. Their faces are hard-core, if that even makes sense. However! My new icon is completely irrelevant to the reason I'm posting...

As I posted before, I went to go see the movie again last night. It's a very good thing I did too, because I left the theatre enjoying it even more. See, the first time I saw it was the midnight showing. I didn't really have any caffeine, so I was pretty tired. Being tired didn't help with all that was going on with the story, and I often got lost, and didn't understand certain things that were taking place. I wasn't even all giddy about it afterwards, which to me, was very unusual! Plus (and this is the scary part) I said I "liked it", not "loved it". Kinda weird, coming from me eh?

Honestly, I still can't say I loved the movie 100%, and I have NO IDEA why! I mean, I really really really liked it, but I can't bring myself to say "I love it" just yet. However, there are many scenes that I did love, I just don't think I loved the movie overall. Weird.

Movie

In my opinion, I thought the movie was too long, and I think there were some ridiculous scenes they could've cut out to help with the length of it. For instance: The multiple Jacks. [info]metallicabull and I both agreed that they tried too hard as far as humor goes, and the multiple Jacks was part of that mistake. I mean, some of it was funny, but there was way too much of it. I have a question though, in POTC I or II didn't someone say how a person can go absolutely mad in Davy Jones' Locker which could result in hallucinating? If so, I understand why they followed through with these scenes, but honestly, I thought there was a little too much of it.

The opening scene really surprised me. I couldn't believe how depressing it was. At first, I wasn't liking it, but after seeing it again, I decided otherwise. I especially love how everyone begins singing the song with the little boy (sooo sad btw). It was very dramatic and powerful. If anyone has the lyrics, please share them with me :)

Since POTC I, everything has gradually gotten bigger, darker and even more violent. This one topped them all. I liked the darkness, but was very surprised at the violence, and even the increase of sexual innuendo they brought into this one. Doesn't seem like Disney to me. Oh well.

I think the music was, once again, beautifully done. It couldn't have been better! My mom bought the soundtrack, so I'll be adding that to my iPod very soon.

The Acting was great, of course. And I predicted correctly! Will's part was way better, and they finally gave him the praise he deserved. He did what he had to do, got the girl, saved his father, and became Captain. Sweet.

My only complaint as far as acting goes: Chow Yun-Fat, could've delivered his lines a little better. He was too hard to understand! Actually, I have another one too Keira Knightley annoyed me the most in this one. I thought she over-dramatized some parts, and she also spoke extremely fast in a couple of scenes. I think she got too comfortable doing that in "Pride and Prejudice", lol.

I think the movie could've been done in a better way to make the story a little less confusing. There are a few parts that are hard to follow, and it's not as fun as the first movie.

Characters

Barbossa! You crazy Captain, you! I was so glad he had a big part in this one. His humor and the way he speaks is priceless! I can't even tell you how many times he made me laugh. I almost died when he was laughing while going over the waterfall, and stearing the ship near the end. WHAT THE HECK? Who does that? It totally reminded me of ROTS when the Emperor is hanging there (after fighting Yoda) and he's just laughing.

There were a lot of mixed feelings about him marrying Will & Lizzy, but I LOVED it! It was perfect. "Just kiss!!!" he says. Ha ha ha!

Davy Jones. Ohhh yes. I fell in love with him even more, what an amazing character he is! I just about melted when he goes to see Tia Dalma. Her locket was playing, and when she closed it, his finished the song. Ahh! BEAUTIFUL! I wish they could've been together, and I so would've died for a flashback between them. Can you even imagine?

"My heart will always belong to you." *Sighs* I think I can say, without a doubt, they surpass Will & Lizzy as far as relationships go in POTC.

Will. I'm so happy he followed through with everything. He was willing to go all the way. All he wanted was to save his father and marry his girl. As I said above, his character in this movie surpassed the last two.

I got so scared when he stabbed ([info]metallicabull pointed out that he was stabbed by the sword he made in POTC I!), but then realized what was going to happen. I love that he became Captain (and he so deserved it), but it's so heartbreaking that he had to leave Elizabeth, and could only come back once every ten years. Why couldn't she go with him? It frustrated me, because of all they've been through. They can't even really be together. :( Their last kiss almost made me cry *tears*.

The extra scene at the end of the credits was so surprising! I assumed it was going to be something that didn't really matter, you know something funny like the others. Dang, was I wrong!! That was the most beautiful and sweetest thing! Ahhh, little Will. One thing though, shouldn't Will have been more surprised, or showed more emotion since it was the first time he saw his son? I certainly think so.

Elizabeth. Not much to say about her really. Ha, how sad. If you put her with Will though, I'm good. I'm good. The whole 'Captain' & "King" thing was kinda silly, although we know she used her rank to do what needed to be done, and I liked that. She did kick some major but though. Woot for her.

Captain Teague! Hard-core and completely layed back. Gotta love it. There was something about him that just made him THE MAN. *Jack's frozen and hesitant look* - "You're in my way boy." HA HA HA! Oh, and "Sea turtles mate."...funny, but what the heck? The dog (who we named 'Will') is back? I assumed those crazy people on the island killed him. Guess not! Obviously he was determined since the keys he was responsible for were to unlock the Pirate Code book!! Now, that was funny.

I'm so sick of Lord Beckett. He's so lame. Drinking tea in the middle of the war, ok then! You just do that. And the end when he's defeated? PLEASE! So dramatic and unrealistic. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Bootstrap Bill. I felt so bad for him! The scene with him and Elizabeth broke my heart. The whole time I was saying to myself "You gotta save him!". Poor daddy, lol.

Norrington! What happened? Not only was he NOT a Pirate anymore (boo-hoo), AND had an extremely small part, but he died! Didn't see that coming at all. Things got a little steamy with him and Elizabeth for a minute too. Why is it she kissed him back? And how come she either gives or receives a kiss from practically everyone in the movie? Silly Lizzy.

Tia Dalma. Just as interesting, although she seemed somewhat darker (as in a darker character). I like how everyone respects her just 'cause she has power, lol.

I was highly disappointed by the Pirate Lords. I wish they weren't so ridiculous looking. I was hoping for some grand and glorious PIRATEY looking Pirates, you know?

Monkey! What can I say? Cute and funny as ever. *POKES*

Pintel, Ragetti and the crew were just as awesome. I seriously can't see those guys as anything else than Pirates, ha ha ha. They're great.

Murtogg and Mullroy! I was wondering if they'd bring them back or not. They were so funny at the end...trying to be all fierce and Piratey.

And last, but not least, Captain Jack Sparrow! The way the thinks, runs, and just everything that he gets himself into is the best. He tries to be serious and all Captain-like, but can't really stick with it for too long. He's seriously just a goofy guy in Pirates clothing. Well, not entirely. He does expect a lot from being Captan, "Mr. Gibbs, you may throw my hat." *Throws it* "Now go get it." - LOL! He really loves the sea, rum and everything else that comes with being a Pirate. So, more just like the goofiest Pirate ever. :P

Favorite & Not-so-Favorite Scenes

Giant Tia Dalma/Calypso - I will be extremely tempted to skip this scene when I own the movie on DVD. Her becoming a giant seemed so out of place. It was so ridiculous. I think she should've turned into an element after breathing in the smoke and fleeing to the ocean or sky.

Jack & Barbossa's Conversation on the Beach - AMAZING. This was the scene where Jack, Barbossa and the rest of the crew walk up to the dead Kraken on the beach. Jack is observing the Kraken, and probably having some flash-backs, while Barbossa walks up and starts talking with him. For me, it was one of the best scenes in the movie. They both treated each other as old friends. They were serious and completely real with one another, and I loved that. Major props for acting!

Multiple Jacks - Neh. As I said above, I think they overdid it. I they tried too hard as far as humor goes, and the multiple Jacks was part of that mistake.

Davy Jones & Tia Dalma - *Sighs* Beautiful, touching scene. No matter what Davy did to fight against the feelings he had for her, it always came right back at him, and hard. Everything that led up to this scene made it even more powerful. The tear Davy shed, the pain, both of them reminiscing while holding/listening to the music from their lockets, etc. I would've loved to see some flash backs with them. Maybe deleted scenes?

Everything Cutler Beckett (Especially his death) - Annoyance. Wuss. Snobby. Over dramatic death, and too long. He didn't deserve it.

Elizbath & Bootstrap Bill's Conversation - Elizabeth had this warm kindess about her while talking to Bill, which I really liked. I felt very sad for the both of them. Bill, because he got even worse since DMC, and his memory was failing him. And for Lizzy because she realized that Will would have to make a choice. Very sad, but sweet scene.

How's Momma? - Yeah, I laughed for about a little over 30 seconds:

Jack: "How's Momma?"
[Teague holds up shrunken female head]
[Jack acts surprised]
Jack: "She looks great."
[Teague continues to stare at him]

Ha ha ha ha ha. Ohhhh I want to watch that scene again. Basically, I loved the scenes with Jack and his dad, even though they were very very short.

Barbossa Marrying Will & Elizabeth - I think this has become 'Classic'. Absolutely laughy.

Will returning to Lizzy & Son - Already wrote about this one too. Beautiful and perfect way to end it!

Jack & Barbossa Arguing - One of the funniest parts:

Barbossa: " What are you doing?"
Jack: "What are you doing?"
Barbossa: "No, what are you doing?"
Jack: "What are you doing?"
Barbossa: "No, what are you doing?"
Jack: "What are you doing? Hmm. Captain gives orders on the ship."
Barbossa: "The Captain of this ship is giving orders!"
Jack: "My ship, makes me captain!"
Barbossa: "They be my charts!"
Jack: "That makes you Chart-man!"
Pintel: "Stow it! The both of you! That's an order! Understand!"
Pintel: "Sorry, I just thought that with the Captain issue in doubt I'd just throw in my name for consideration. Sorry."

Western Moment before the Battle - Hehe! (Just had to say it.) It's the Parlay scene!

Do you fear death? - Ok, so this might have been used too much (a total of three times, I believe) but it was so funny to me. Davy Jones sure can be obsessive.

Elizabeth's Speach - Wasn't too fond of it, especially the way she started it, "You will listen to me. LISTEN TO ME!!". And did she have to scream the whole thing?

[Whoa, I smell an amazing BBQ right now...]

The Battle - Such amazing visuals! There was so much going on! I loved how the sea split and both ships were right in the core of it. It made the battle even more intense.

Final Thoughts

-I very much enjoyed the randomness. Example: Ragetti points and says "Boat!". Sooo silly :P

-What if Davy Jones isn't really dead? If he went to his own Locker, couldn't he get out?

-Was the reason why Davy Jones' crew transformed back to humans because Will, their new Captain was a human? I didn't get that.

-I'm still lost about the map Barbossa had. Was it just some special map or was there more of a signifigance to it? Must be since Jack too it right?

-Still don't know if I like this one better than DMC, guess I have to watch it again!

Well, that's it folks. Hope I'm not forgetting anything, although I'll probably post more thoughts later as the come.

I'll be posting about being in line for the midnight show, along with some pictures later.

Jack and Barbossa Budwiser commercial: What are you doing? I laughed so hard, mostly 'cause I was associating it with the Bud commercials from a few years back. Or perhaps it should be a rum commercial :)

Awesome post babe. From you...the longer the better, to me.

Norrington was not a pirate anymore because he is the one who delivered Davy Jones' heart to Cutler Schmeckett. That was Norrington's goal for most of DMC (since he learned about the heart).

Barbossa's map WAS more than just the usual map. Actually, Jack took it 'cause he was going to find the fountain of youth at the end of the movie. That's where he was headed in his little dinghy. Remember when those dudes wanted Barbossa to show them where they were going and he said "There's more than one way to live forever" and unrolled his map, only to find the middle torn out. Then it showed Jack turn the circles in the center of the map and he lined up the picture of the fountain of youth.

We'll see if they make another one. It's up to Johnny, pretty much, because it would be utter ick if they made another one without him. Although I must say his performances in the last two flicks were a letdown, to me. Not nearly the brilliance of the first one. Then again, the writers must share some of the blame for his decline in quality from the first movie.

From what I understand, the reason Davy Jones was cursed eternally was because Calypso wasn't waiting for him at the end of his ten years. I guess the green flash signifies a freed soul, yes? And since Elizabeth was waiting for Will at the end of the ten years, and we saw the green flash, we know that Will's soul was freed and someone else will captain The Flying Dutchman. I guess that was included in the original script but wasn't really played out. So the filmmakers could probably just let the audience think he's only around once every ten years. But a little digging says there's more to it.

Ohhh. But wait didn't the green flash just mean someone was coming from one world to another? Or did really mean they were freed? If so, Will only had to serve the 10 years. But this means more confusion for me.

Ok, found this:

"Rossio: 'Lots of interesting and thought-provoking points. Fun to read.

But to clarify one point: Davy Jones, as Captain of the Flying Dutchman, is cursed to set foot on land only once every ten years ... unless he finds a love that is true to him. Hopefully that rule will be made more clear in the third film.

If the person Jones had been in love with had been true, and waited for him, and stayed in love with him for ten years, upon his return to land his curse would have been lifted. That's a big part of the reason why Jones is so bitter and cruel. He had a chance to lead a normal life ... but his lover was fickle.'

So this means Will was back for good! Oh how happy this makes me!

Lyrics to the song
If anyone has the lyrics, please share them with me :)

From track one of the soundtrack, as best as I can understand them...

The king and his men
Stole the queen from her bed
He bound her in her bones
The seas be our's
And by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam

Yo ho, all together
Hoist the colors high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

I thought Pirates 3 was better than the 2nd. I hated seeing Davy Jones controlled by the EIC. Will was awesome! That secret scene! Be still my heart! I like your hat icon, though I probably missed the importance of the hat in the films, if there were a purpose. Was there? Did I overlook it? Hm. I love it when Barbossa does his crazy laugh! Great. I thought the characters were much better and developed in this one. I have no complaints about anything. Except for the Calipso story line. Too far out there.

Well, Jack has a 'thing' about his hat. However, it was a very scene where Jack goes:

"Mr. Gibbs, you may throw my hat." He throws it. Then Jack says "Now, go get it.".

But yes Jack is quite obsessed with what he calles, his 'effects'.
